We’re very excited to have opened our Conscious Crafts Counter at Flo’s! Flo’s very own little crafts supply ‘shop‘! Mostly stocking natural craft materials in the form of kits which make beautiful gifts. Sale of these will help raise funds to keep Flo’s open. Come along to have a potter around and see if anything takes your fancy.
Firstly, a huge thanks to all our community investors! Over the last seven weeks the local investors from the community have come together to raise an amazing £34,219. You’re amazing – thank you for having faith in the future of this community run and owned project.
At the same time, the steering group at Flo’s have been working away to apply for a booster fund run by Co-Operatives UK. We heard this week that we’ve been successful, meaning that Co-operatives UK, supported by Power to Change, will match fund the local investment up to Flo’s target of £50,000.
We’re thrilled, as that this means our target has now been reached! This funding will allow Flo’s to carry out initial refurbishment works, and also provide working capital, while the community enterprises (such as the cafe, craft workshops and hire space) become established.
There are still lots of ways to get involved in Flo’s (and we need all the support we can get especially as it looks like building works will be starting very soon!). Have a think if you could become a volunteer; become a member or donate to the crowdfunding campaign.
For those that still want to invest, via our community shares offer, you still have five days to do so! The community share offer will remain open, via the ethical investment platform Ethex, until Monday 18 June.
***The Social Action Activity days planned for the 24th and 25th of May have been rescheduled***
Due to some delays, we are not quite ready to get all hands on deck with re-purposing Flo’s building. These events will now take place in the summer when we’ll be getting ready to open the cafe and events space. It would be great to have you come along…so do watch this space!
We’re celebrating the spring with a focus on some of the good news that has marked our way since last Autumn when the Florence Park community campaigned to re-open the closed down children’s centre under a new guise.
We’re so grateful for, and inspired by the amazing and tireless work of many people in the community to make this a reality – thank you!

Flo’s – The Place in the Park’s opening is just around the corner…as we get ready to open our doors to Florence Park’s diverse community, we thought we’d give you an update on what has been going on so far behind the scenes and some tips on how you can get involved in this exciting community owned and run project.
Once complete, Flo’s – The Place in the Park will become an open and accessible space for the whole community to use, dedicated to serve the diverse needs of the Florence Park area. Flo’s will provide a flexibly priced community café, community midwife services, an affordable children’s nature nursery and a community drop-in space. We hope it will become an inspiration to many others!
Since the community campaign, which gathered 1,600 signatures, and the granting of the bid to re-open the centre (read more about our history here) the members of the steering group have been working hard to get the former children’s centre’s doors open once again! We have been busy registering Flo’s-The Place in the Park as a community interest company, preparing the nursery space and will shortly be appointing our nursery manager, and we’ve been working with the community midwives to ensure they can continue their work under new management.
We’ve also been reaching out to the community with a recent volunteers event kindly hosted by the wonderful folks at Camerados Café in the Ark T centre. It was a pleasure to meet some brilliant people from the Florence Park area – with lots of enthusiasm to get involved.
Another exciting upcoming aspect of work on Flo’s is our community share offer. The Steering group has been working to prepare this over the last weeks and you can find out more about it here register you interest to be part of Flo’s future from the very beginning by emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org
In 2 weeks contractors will be moving in to do some final refurbishment works on the building in time for the café opening at the end of May *(keep your eyes peeled!).
As we are preparing to open the doors, we need the whole community to come together to get Flo’s ready for opening. There are lots of ways you can get involved.
